About us
Founded in 1983, in the shadow of Lugnaquilla Mountain, the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team has developed to provide a best-in-class, 999/112 mountain rescue service for all of County Wicklow and nationwide when required. We are now based in our purpose-built premises in Trooperstown.
Our team of around 40 volunteers train in best practices to provide a professional standard search and rescue service, free of charge to those in need of help in the Wicklow mountains and surrounding areas 24 hours/day, 365 days/year.
Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team members specialise in search management, technical (rock) rescue and swift water rescue. Many of our members also specialise in emergency medicine to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic level, with Emergency First Responder (EFR) being the baseline medical qualification for our rescuers.
We work closely with colleagues in the statutory emergency services – National Ambulance Service, An Garda Siochana, Fire Service, Defence Forces and Coast Guard. We also collaborate closely with our colleagues in Wicklow and neighbouring mountain rescue teams.
Our rescue base, vehicles, equipment and training are all funded through a combination of grant aid, donations and fundraising events. We rely very heavily on the generosity of our donors to maintain the service. Our mission is to provide the best possible outcomes for those in need of assistance in the upland areas of County Wicklow.
